SHAKING THE TREE ... #24
How to Write Killer Sales Letters: A Short Guide to Crafting Persuasive and Action-Generating Messages
As you’re reading this, I’ll be flying back from a 5-day trip to see my family in the UK.
I’m mentioning this because the technology of the Substack newsletter platform allows me to write and schedule editions of Shaking the Tree days if not weeks advance, which might sound super simple but frankly, it’s something that still excites me.
Anyway, here’s today’s edition:
Like it or not, our online lives are environments in which communication channels are constantly evolving.
Because of this, and particularly when we’re involved in the process of practical persuasion, the art, craft, and science of writing clear, concise, compelling, and effective sales letters remains one of the most powerful tools in our business-building skillset.
Where a trite cliché will fail, and where an over exaggerated claim will fall short,
a well-reasoned, well thought out, and well-crafted sales letter can and will captivate your audience, ignite their interest, and ultimately drive them to take action.
Whether you're promoting a product, a service, or an idea, mastering the art of writing killer sales letters is essential for achieving your marketing goals.
Here are a few thoughts:
Know your audience:
Before you start writing, understand your target audience. Who are you writing to?
Research their needs, desires, pain points, and motivations.
What are they interested in? What problem do they have? How does the subject of your letter solve this problem?
Don’t guess. Take the time to find out. Then write to those points.
Tailor your sales letter to resonate with their specific interests and address their challenges.
Use language, phrasing, and tone that matches their communication style.
The more you understand your audience, the better you can connect with them and compel them to take action.
Grab attention with a compelling headline:
Your headline is the first impression you make on your readers.
It must be attention-grabbing and compelling enough to make them want to read further.
Use powerful words, intriguing questions, or enticing promises to pique their curiosity.
Highlight the value or solution you offer, and make it clear why they should continue reading.
Create a compelling opening:
Once you have captured their attention with a compelling headline, it's crucial to maintain their interest with a strong opening.
Start with a captivating story, a relatable anecdote, or a thought-provoking statement.
Engage your readers emotionally, make them feel understood, and show them how your offering can address their pain points or fulfill their desires.
Focus on benefits rather than features:
When describing your product or service, focus on the benefits it provides rather than simply listing its features.
Highlight how your offering can solve problems, improve their lives, or fulfill their aspirations.
Paint a vivid picture of the positive outcomes they can expect, and explain how your solution is unique and superior to alternatives in the market.
Use persuasive language and social proof:
To increase the persuasiveness of your sales letter, use strong and persuasive language. Incorporate power words, such as "exclusive," "proven," "guaranteed," and "limited offer," to evoke emotions and create a sense of urgency.
Additionally, include social proof, such as testimonials, case studies, or success stories, to build credibility and reassure readers that others have benefitted from your offering.
Include a clear call to action:
A crucial element of a killer sales letter is a clear and compelling call to action (CTA).
Clearly instruct your readers on what action they should take next, whether it's making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or scheduling a consultation.
Make the CTA stand out visually and emphasize the benefits of taking action immediately.
Edit, polish, tweak, and refine:
Once you have written the first draft of your sales letter, take the time to edit and polish it.
Eliminate unnecessary words or sentences.
Make it concise and impactful.
Ensure the flow is smooth and coherent, and check for grammar and spelling errors.
Consider seeking feedback from colleagues or trusted individuals to gain fresh perspectives and refine your message further.
Crafting killer sales letters requires a strategic approach that combines persuasive language, audience understanding, and a compelling call to action.
By knowing your audience, grabbing attention with a compelling headline, focusing on benefits, incorporating persuasive language and social proof, including a clear call to action, and editing and polishing your message, you can create sales letters that generate action and drive results.
Embrace the power of persuasive writing and watch your conversion rates soar as your audience responds to your compelling sales messages.
As always, thanks for reading.
