Do you like fake people?
I suspect not.
In a world saturated with curated images and carefully crafted personas, there’s one thing that sets individuals apart—something that forges deeper connections in both our personal and professional lives.
That principle is authenticity.
I’m sure you’ve come across all kinds of people online, some of whom on closer inspection haven’t been what they claimed to be.
Regular readers of Shaking the Tree will know (I hope) that I do my best to offer a warts-and-all, what-you-see-is-what-you-get approach.
I know Shaking the Tree isn’t to everyone’s liking; no doubt I rub certain people the wrong way. I’m OK with that because I do my best to be myself.
Authenticity—that, most genuine expression of one's values and personality—remains the cornerstone of creating content that gets remembered. I think authenticity plays an important part in making lasting, impactful impressions.
As life becomes increasingly saturated with digital noise, I think it’s essential to embrace authenticity as a strategic necessity.
The essence of authenticity goes beyond being transparent, embracing the idea that content ought to reflect the creator's true self and beliefs.
Authentic content shouldn’t be a persona you adopt or a façade you erect, it ought to be a sincere representation of who you are; a principle that needs to apply to all forms of content, from written articles and videos to social media posts and podcasts.
Why?
Because authenticity builds trust and belief—without which no one’s going to buy anything from you
If your content doesn’t build trust and belief you’re wasting your time.
Trust and belief are the foundations of all meaningful relationships, which includes the connections you create with the people you’re talking to.
Authenticity allows you as a creator to connect with your audience on a deeply personal level. The more your subscribers trust you and believe you—and the more those bonds deepen—the more your audience's loyalty increases.
When subscribers see you as someone genuine, they’ll be more likely to engage with you and support your work.
Authenticity is the thing that sets you apart from everyone else
With billions of people online at any one time it’s difficult for any content creator to stand out. But authenticity gives you an an edge—setting you apart from the crowd by showcasing your voice.
As online trends come and go, authenticity keeps your content relevant and evergreen.
Authenticity helps you connect where it counts: emotionally
Authentic content resonates with people because it comes from a real place, one that addresses shared experiences, concerns, struggles, and aspirations.
Whether that’s through sharing personal stories, or discussing vulnerabilities, or in expressing your personal passions, authentic content allows your audience to connect with you beyond the superficiality of an offer or a discount.
This emotional connection can be transformative, turning casual viewers into dedicated followers.
I think people are more inclined to comment, share, and provide feedback on content that genuinely moves them in some way. Engaging with your audience creates a sense of community that can turn your content into a two-way dialogue.
If you’re looking to make a lasting impact, authenticity is your key
Forget about “fake it til you make it” thinking, ito resonate with your audience you must be authentic. Being truthful, open, honest, and personal makes it more likely that you’ll inspire change, spark discussions, and influence opinions.
Authenticity lends weight and gravity to your content in ways that no level of fakery ever will simply because authenticity is so deeply rooted in sincerity as opposed to manipulation.
As the amount of digital content increases and people’s attention spans become ever more fleeting, authenticity will continually draw people in: fostering trust, deepening connections, and setting you apart from the masses . Used wisely, authenticity is the secret ingredient that will transform you into something extraordinary.
Authenticity shouldn’t just be a buzzword. It needs to be the compass that guides you.
Here are seven tips to help you achieve greater authenticity along the way:
1. Know thyself: Authenticity starts with self-awareness. Understand your values, beliefs, and personal story. The more you know yourself, the more genuine your content will be.
2. Honesty is key: Be honest and transparent in your content. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, and don't be afraid to admit when you don't know something. Your audience will appreciate your authenticity.
