Recovering perfectionist. Branding advocate, graphic design geek, and small business marketing champion. I’m on a mission to help create 1 million content creators by the year 2030.

Originally from the north west of the United Kingdom, I’ve lived and worked in the United States since May, 1999.

After training as a graphic designer, I spent 25 years working in museums and exhibition design in the UK and the United States.

I’ve been interested in advertising copywriting since the early 1990s. Around 2007, this turned more towards the effectiveness of direct response marketing.

Around the middle of 2009 I began answering marketing questions on the Know-How Exchange of MarketingProfs.com.

Initially on MarketingProfs.com no one knew who I was, but within a year I’d become one of the forum’s top three contributors, covering a range of business-related subjects from marketing, advertising, strategy, social media, branding, and copywriting, to customer behavior, website design, tag lines, student questions, and SEO and SEM.

More recently, I’ve turned my attentions to sharing thoughts and opinions on content creation, marketing, branding, and graphic design for online publishers and business owners.

Since May of 2023 I’ve been publishing a twice weekly newsletter here on Substack called Shaking the Tree in which I share thoughts and opinions on content creation, marketing, branding, and graphic design.
